2025 Stein am Rhein, Switzerland
In the picturesque Stein am Rhein, where history and landscape converge, this residence quietly engages in dialogue with both earth and sky. The architecture does not seek to impose itself, but to embody a silent strength — a presence that feels as though it has always belonged to this place.
The rammed concrete plinth forms the grounding element of the project. Layer uponlayer, the compacted earth-like material reads like a geological record: a stratifi cation that anchors the dwelling fi rmly to its site. This massive base is both protector and bearer; it provides shelter and tactile solidity, as if the house has grown directly out of the soil — an extension of the terrain itself.
Resting upon this solid foundation is the wooden crown. Where the base is heavy and permanent, the crown is light and mutable. The timber cladding fi lters sun and shade, breathes with the seasons, and carries within it a certain delicacy. As it ages, the wood acquires a natural patina, evolving year after year, engaging in a second dialogue: that between material and time.
