Experience pavilion

2022 Wichelen, Belgium.

To create an experiential space, nōmar architects landed in rural, sprawling Wichelen. The rural plot is home to Splendide Keukens, a bespoke furniture company in need of expanding their business with a showroom to display some new kitchens and bespoke furniture.

Unlike a typical showroom where kitchens and bespoke furniture are placed to sell, nōmar architects was asked to design a showroom with the aim of inspiring and showing people what this company is capable of. Customers can explore the concatenation of spaces and be inspired. The experience pavilion came about.

The new extension is located at the front of the existing house on the plot. The experience pavilion appears as a long horizontal volume, carefully positioned along the existing house whose pavilion embraces the northeast corner of the house. A neutral colour palette of light bald walls and black-brown wooden beams & ceilings materialise the pavilion. The proposed materials are maximally inspired by the palette of materials already present on the site to form a harmonious whole.

For the experience pavilion, nōmar architects designed a walk through different spaces with different experiences and impressions. The reception area is occupied in a dark red mortex to detach from the exterior and set tone for what is yet to come in the interior. A pair of exhibition kitchens were carefully placed in an open space that was nevertheless sufficiently divided to create a totally different experience in both kitchens. The walk ends in the library, which in terms of custom-made furniture is the absolute cream of the crop and exudes the values of Splendide Kitchens.
